Day 14

Let us begin with a rhyme written exclusively for this blog, by our very own Sol R.

If you like to watch figure skating
And always keep all your friends waiting.
If you feel as though it takes over your life
This may lead to feelings of strife.
If you feel the need to watch it in order
You might have an Olympics Disorder.

So let's discuss the women's skiing from last night. Because of the heavy snow, skiers started racing before the skier before them had completed the course. In her first run, Lindsey Vonn fell and broke her pinkie finger. American Julia Mancuso, who was the defending Olympic champion in this event, raced right behind Vonn, not knowing that Lindsey had crashed. Halfway through, the referees made Julia stop since Lindsey was still sitting on the course. At that point, Mancuso's time was among the leaders of the race. Mancuso was then brought back to the top to being the race over, at which point the conditions were a lot worse and she ended up way behind the leaders. The second run of the event will be raced today. It's too bad, and maybe the referees need to rethink the idea of having two racers on the course at the same time, especially in dangerous conditions.

Other than that, I'm gonna call yesterday the most boring day of the Olympics so far. Nothing else to report.

  1. Most boring day?! Did you watch US-Switzerland, or Canada-Russia? Great hockey!

  2. Oh, right. I forgot that people actually care about hockey. Even so, can't compare yesterday to Super Sunday when the U.S. played Canada. So I'm sticking by my original opinion.

  3. It was the greatest day of the Olympics yet for Canada. A gold, two silvers, and a bronze for us, and a crushing win over Russia in hockey. We call it Wonderful Wednesday.

  4. I loved the aerials! Johnny Mosley was an awesome commentator, really explaining the technique, like how arm motion affects movement in the air. The Australian woman who won the gold also had a bit of an interesting story.

  5. Monday was boring. Yesterday was awesome because of hockey.

  6. You forgot that people actually care about hockey? And you're writing a blog on the Winter Olympics?

  7. Even NBC "forgets" that people like hockey and airs that stuff on their affiliate channels right alongside curling.

  8. First of all, Mancuso really got messed over. NBC had a quick clip where they showed two promising athletes who lost due to circumstances not within their control. One of them being Mancuso. They explained that not only had conditions worsened but when skiers take a second run, their skies are not as waxed, and for obvious reasons they do not have the energy they had minutes before. Danger or not, they should not have thrown the yellow flag. By doing so, they literally robbed her of any chance of a medal. here is the vid:

Lydia Lassila's gold in Aerials. I am not usually into Aerials but this was pretty sick.

  9. NBC airs hockey on MSNBC because you can't chop up a hockey game into 5 minute clips like all the other sports.

  11. I must echo the sentiments of the Hockey fans. So far I watched more Olympics yesterday than any other day, perhaps because of this- http://blogs.wsj.com/deals/2010/02/24/credit-suisse-tells-employees-to-play-hooky-for-us-swiss-hockey-game/?KEYWORDS=hockey+game+is+on

  12. i am loving all the comments. but if you're going to post "anonymous" (as i do) at least put your initials at the end so we can guess you is writing.

i wasn't so into last nite's olympics but i thought the women's short track relay was interesting. the koreans finished first and the americans finished last. but then the koreans were disqualified and the americans who hadn't a chance in hell of winning ended up w/the bronze. go figure! it wasn't such an exciting race but it was a good story to tell my clients this morning. ---MNB

  13. 12 comments and not even one from me?? Whoa. I guess my protest is over. I didn't get home last night until 11:45 so I didn't watch any Olympics so I had nothing to say. I'm sure I will have much to say tomorrow about how unfair figure skating judges are. :) Oh and hi to my long lost friend Jon Milner if he ever reads this again.

  14. I am loving all the comments, keep 'em coming.

Avi Z. - Sorry, I just can't tell the difference between one skier and the next. All of their tricks look exactly the same to me. Good luck to Jeret Speedy Peterson in the men's aerials though. He did some tricks on skis and a trampoline in Rock Center, it was very cool.

Regarding the hockey - obviously there are fans. There are probably more NHL fans than fans of all the other Winter Olympic sports combined. But it wasn't like the finals were being played yesterday. In fact many sports didn't give out medals yesterday, which is why I'm calling it the most boring day of the Olympics. I didn't call it boring. Just more boring than the rest.

Mil - Solly's promised to have a mash-up by the end of this blog. Maybe he can put the rhyme to some Toto.

Ezra - you just watched the hockey so you could get out of work.

MNB - with the women's skating finals tonight, I am sure you'll have a story to tell, since even I don't know what kind of reactions I'm capable of.

Zehava - Thanks for coming back, you are a true friend of Sara's Countdown to Vancouver. I always knew I could count on you.
